Student Resources

The primary function of the Assistant Deans of Students is to help students and their families get answers and solutions to those tough college-life questions or problems that students may have. They may include life decisions (personal or academic), navigating the bureaucracy of a large institution and/or learning self-advocacy. As the place to go when you don't know where to go, we pride ourselves as being an office where students can see a professional on a walk-in basis and when they leave our office they will have an answer to their question, a solution to their problem, or an effective referral to the office or professional who can answer their question. In addition to these more general services, we serve in other more specific roles in several different areas as listed below. General Services, Policies and Procedures

Request Extension for an Incomplete Course
If you require an extension for a previously approved incomplete, you may pick up an Extension of Incomplete form from the Dean of Students Office. You and your instructor will agree on a new deadline for completion of the course. You will then return the completed Extension of Incomplete Form to the Dean of Students office for processing.


FERPA Waiver Form

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."

Voluntary Separation from the University
Students considering or having decided to leave the University should contact the Dean of Students Office to discuss their options and to officially process their separation from the University. This includes students withdrawing from a semester in progress, students informing us they are not returning for the upcoming semester and students requesting consideration for a leave of absence to take a semester or more off but with a specific return date established.


Voluntary Health Leave
The University recognizes that there are times when a student’s physical or mental health needs may be best addressed if the student takes a leave of absence from the University. When an undergraduate student decides to take a voluntary leave of absence, the following procedure will apply.


Readmission to the University
Whenever there is a gap in a student's attendance, regardless of the reason, they must be readmitted back to the University through the Dean of Students Office. The readmission application can be found on our website and is due by December 1st for a spring semester readmission and July 1st for a fall semester readmission.


Residency Status
Students who start at the University in an out-of-state billing status who change their permanent residence to Connecticut can contact the Dean of Students Office to be considered for in-state billing after they have lived in this state for at least 12 months. Staff in the Dean of Students Office are available to provide detailed information on all the requirements for this change and to do the final certification of a change of status.


Short Term Emergency Loans (STELF)
The Dean of Students Office has an emergency loan fund available to degree students during the months of the year when they are in classes at the University. The fund is intended to help students in financial emergencies such as transportation cost home when there is and illness or other family emergency, car repairs, living expenses, school supplies, etc. Loans are for a maximum of $500 and usually expected to be repaid in one to three months. These loans cannot be used to pay a balance owed to the University on their fee bill or student financial account.


Excused Absence from Final Examinations
When students are forced to miss a final examination due to illness, accident, death in the family or other unavoidable reasons they can come to the Dean of Students Office to receive approval to arrange another exam time with their instructor. Students should present appropriate documentation to support their request. With other exams and assignments which are required during the semester students bring their documentation of extenuating circumstances directly to their instructors.
